Crafty Gallery is a small independent company, so small and independent that the team consists of me, Fiona Savage. I created Crafty Gallery this summer (2014) aiming to get back into art and crafts. Coming up with a name for the company wasn’t easy, but after much deliberation I settled on the name Crafty Gallery. The name highlights how my work sits in between the boundaries of arts and crafts. My work can easily be categorised and used as both, but I felt to define it as one or the other was wrong. I made my first card just before my friend's birthday, which once again I remembered at the last minute. I ran round the house looking for a solution when I found an old oil painting I had done during my endless hours of dissertation writing at university. I had no qualms about cropping it to fit my purpose so chopped away and stuck it to a piece of nice art paper from a sketchbook. That was the end of it for then, I'd got my solution. Then I remembered my time at university whiling away hours using colour and texture to express my feelings. There were a few more paintings I could transform into cards. I could be prepared for upcoming birthdays. This quickly turned into an obsession, only the old paintings weren't how I felt anymore, so I painted new ones. I started to have a small collection of cards. After seeing the interest from my friends and family I thought I could take this further. And so fast forward to today and I’m currently making A6 and A7 greetings cards. All of the cards are made up of signed original abstract oil paintings. They all represent a thought, emotion or something that has inspired me. I am also creating gift tags and constantly trying new ideas. I have just dropped my first lot of stock to All Good Stuff, an art and craft gallery in Sheffield. It is all starting to feel fairly professional which is very exciting. |
